Blacktop Wasteland
by S.A. Cosby

Powerful, gritty, and lyrical, S. A. Cosby’s Blacktop Wasteland is the unflinching portrayal of a man who’s deeply aware he needs to make a better life for himself and his family, but can’t — or won’t. This story is an emotional gut punch, and you’ll find yourself rooting for Beauregard while he’s ripping your heart out. Cosby is a mesmerizing new voice in crime fiction you won’t soon forget. This is literary noir at its finest.

Blacktop Wasteland follows Beauregard “Bug” Montage as he tries to navigate his life, torn between being the  notorious getaway driver he once was, and the honest mechanic, hard-working dad, and loving husband that he now is.  Bug is trying to do the best that he can for both his family and business, but it doesn’t seem to be enough because the bills keep piling, the debts keep rising, and it looks as if he will lose them both.  Even though Bug is determined to keep his criminal life in the past and make an honest living, an opportunity arises that he just can’t refuse.  By doing this job, he would have enough money to save everything that he’s about to lose, and then some.  However, when what seems like a well-planned, quick, and simple job takes a turn for the worst, Bug is forced to consider if the risk of returning to the Life was worth jeopardizing the life he’s worked so hard to build.

To get right to the point, I could not. stop. reading. this. book.  From the very first page, I was completely immersed into the writing, the story, and into the lives of the characters.  Cosby’s writing and storytelling is captivating and engaging, and the characters that he has created just pull on your heart strings from all directions.  The reader becomes invested in Bug’s situation and family dynamic, and roots for him throughout all stages of the book.

Blacktop Wasteland is unlike any other crime thriller that I have ever read, and I’m all for it.  It’s gritty, it’s dark, it’s violent and foul, and it reads like an action-packed movie, where you have to hold on to your seat to get through it in one piece.  However, this book is also so much more than just a crime thriller.  It’s an emotionally charged story that tackles the important issues of race, class, identity, as well as difficult family and father-son relationships.  This book and the issues it addresses are complex, but Cosby’s writing approaches these topics effortlessly.

I simply cannot recommend this book enough; take the plunge and read it because you will not be disappointed!

ABOUT BLACKTOP WASTELAND:

Beauregard “Bug” Montage is an honest mechanic, a loving husband, and a hard-working dad. Bug knows there’s no future in the man he used to be: known from the hills of North Carolina to the beaches of Florida as the best wheelman on the East Coast.

He thought he’d left all that behind him, but as his carefully built new life begins to crumble, he finds himself drawn inexorably back into a world of blood and bullets. When a smooth-talking former associate comes calling with a can’t-miss jewelry store heist, Bug feels he has no choice but to get back in the driver’s seat. And Bug is at his best where the scent of gasoline mixes with the smell of fear.

Haunted by the ghost of who he used to be and the father who disappeared when he needed him most, Bug must find a way to navigate this blacktop wasteland…or die trying.

Like Ocean’s Eleven meets Drive, with a Southern noir twist, S. A. Cosby’s Blacktop Wasteland is a searing, operatic story of a man pushed to his limits by poverty, race, and his own former life of crime.
