You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty
by Akwaeke Emezi

Thank you to Tandem Collective Global and Simon and Scuster Canada for putting together what was another wonderful Canadian readalong for You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi.

If you’re unfamiliar with the name Tandem Collective Global, they are an organization that creates global “readalongs” for bookstagrammers, booktokers and readers from all around the world.  I will be writing up a blog post explaining who they are, what their organization is all about, and what working with them looks like, in the coming weeks.  They are super fun to work with and they are probably one of my favourite things to come out of bookstagram and the community of online book readers!

You can find also information on their website and bookstagram.

The book choices of the Tandem Collective Global readalongs are always so good. They tend to be books that are outside my preferred genres and regular reading comfort zones, but ones that I always end up loving so much. This is especially true for this book, You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi.

I didn’t read the synopsis beforehand, so I was seriously shocked by some of the events and what unfolded was something that I did not expect whatsoever (I was wayyyyy off in my prompt card answers), but ultimately loved. In the case of this book, I think it’s best to go into it blind because the synopsis gives far too much away and I appreciated how I had no idea what was coming.

I will say, however, that YMAFODWYB is a romance novel. It’s not a rom-com or a lighthearted romance in the slightest, but a romance that addresses several deeper, and more painful, themes:
– Moving forward following the unexpected and sudden death of your partner
– Navigating through the long-lasting effects of trauma
– Creating art as a form of healing

Despite the heavier themes, there are still some humorous and lighthearted moments, particularly those shared between Feyi and her best friend Joy—their friendship feels so real and honest, even though some of the language and phrases seemed a little unnatural for a normal conversation.

This book surprised me. The story was beautiful, but also painful, and I cheered for Feyi every step of the way—even though some of her decisions seemed very rash. It had me hooked from the very first page (seriously, that first line) and once I got to the halfway point I could NOT put the book down and stayed up wayyyy too late to finish it. I just loved it all.

If this one isn’t on your summer reading list, it definitely should be!

If you’re not someone who likes going into books blind, like I do, you can check out the full synosis below.

New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award finalist Akwaeke Emezi (they/them) reimagines the love story in this fresh and seductive novel about a young woman seeking joy while healing from loss.

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

She’s even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the dangerous thrill Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits. This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there’s the biggest question of all—how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love?

Akwaeke Emezi’s vivid and passionate writing takes us deep into a world of possibility and healing, and the constant bravery of choosing love against all odds.
